Hydrocube™ Retrofits is establishing a workshop in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada that upgrades snowmobiles and other off road vehicles (ORVs) with ultra-quiet, zero emission hydrogen fuel cell engines that run on locally produced, renewable fuel.

We are also working on a mobile setup that can come to your remote community, research base, or industrial site to perform the upgrade.

We factory refurbish the rest of the snowmobile or ORV before integration and we assure the quality of our work without a formal warranty on non engine components.

No computers

Instead of installing wireless diagnostics and/or giving you frustrating error codes, we focus on building a product that is simple enough for non engineers to understand and fix.

If you have no experience with electric motors or electronics in general, we will help you learn.

Safety:

Electrical

Our electrical system runs at 48 Volts. The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) considers anything lower than 50 volts to be low risk.

We also use CSA-approved wiring and electrical safety components (like breakers, fuses and outdoor-rated plugs).

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is no more or no less safe than other flammable fuels like gasoline or diesel, but it requires understanding the unique properties of hydrogen.

Our hydrogen pressure tanks are DOT-certified to meet stringent testing requirements on each production run.

Adaptability:

The age old wisdom in the snowmobile industry is “it sells when it snows”.

How much longer can we count on snow?

Hovercraft are air-cushion vehicles that can glide over ice, open water, snow, and relatively flat land (for example, tundra river valleys). They do not leave a trace when traveling over sensitive areas like wetlands.

They are ideal for a rapidly changing Arctic climate.

We are planning for the future including massive climate changes in the Arctic and we offer a vehicle-agnostic retrofit service for light vehicles including snowmobiles, ORVs (“four wheelers”), hovercraft and (in future) small fishing boats.

Price:

For a detailed price estimate for your retrofit package, please refer to our pricing matrix below. Please note all prices are in CAD and are FOB Whitehorse, Yukon with the customer paying any additional freight. Follow three simple steps:

1. Select the number of vehicles to be upgraded in the rows

The engines will outlast the vehicles they are in, and can be re-retrofitted into newer vehicles later for a very low cost.

2. Select your current annual snowmobile and ORV fuel use in the columns (L/yr or gal/yr)

Use the next highest column if your actual fuel use falls between columns. Excess hydrogen can be used for other purposes like backup renewable electricity and heating.

3. Find your price (in CAD $M) in the matrix

Note that this price does not currently include volume discounts or government subsidies for the renewable hydrogen fuel station and zero emission vehicles.

Life span of our hydrogen fuel cell engine versus a long-lasting gasoline snowmobile or ORV engine (assuming a complete rebuild at 50,000 miles or 80,000 km).

Between repurchases (if you maintain the non-engine parts of your snowmobile or ORV yourself).

While we do not cover engines older than 10 years under warranty, they are still capable of running up to 1.6 MILLION KILOMETERS (1 MILLION MILES) in typical Arctic tundra travel at 80 km/h.

To extend the life, store the vehicle (when not in use for at least several weeks) indoors away from moisture, humidity and salty sea air.

Cost of one of our hydrogen fuel cell engines, including retrofit service and shipping to Whitehorse, versus a ballpark new gasoline snowmobile or ORV.

Operating (fuel) costs:

One kilogram (kg) of hydrogen is equal to:

53 kWh of electricity

For production on Yukon Energy’s hydroelectric grid (about 12c/kWh), including the demand charge, your fuel will cost between $0.89/L and $1.05/L gasoline equivalent using our hydrogen electrolyzer fueling stations.

Check with local renewable energy installers in your area to determine the local cost of electricity (LCOE).

9 L of water

Only a very small amount of water is needed.

The best thing? Our electrolyzer fueling station has a filter built in, allowing any lake, river or groundwater to be used for hydrogen production.

8.1 L of gasoline

This is enough fuel to travel about 65 kilometers (40 miles).

Exact fuel consumption may vary based on the vehicle model you supply us with and your driving habits and conditions.

Customer Success Tips:

Use the vehicles more frequently than gasoline equivalents

Our retrofitted vehicles are far more reliable compared to gasoline equivalents, but also cost more to purchase. So we recommend using a few vehicles more frequently instead of many vehicles less frequently.

For example, say you have a fleet of 10 gasoline snowmobiles. Consider downsizing your fleet to 5 rugged zero emission hydrogen fuel cell snowmobiles (they are mounted in 2-up utility touring snowmobiles) and size the hydrogen fueling station for the 10 snowmobiles you currently use.

Have a good understanding of your local renewable energy options

Getting an affordable and powerful renewable energy system installed is incredibly important as it reduces the cost of your “green” hydrogen fuel.

Talk to local installers of solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal power systems. Understand what is the most cost effective and powerful renewable electricity solution for your location.

Note that using solar PV and run of river hydroelectricity will require hydrogen storage tanks if the fuel is to be used in winter. This will add significant costs to your system but may be worth it if winter renewable energy generation is expensive or unavailable. Contact us for more details on long-term hydrogen energy storage systems.

Determine if our on-site retrofit service is right for you

The above price table is for retrofits performed and delivered FOB Whitehorse, Yukon, with the customer paying for freight of the finished snowmobiles, ORVs and the 5,000 lb hydrogen fuel station to their location.

If you want us to fly or travel to your location to perform the retrofit, then travel costs, accommodation and training fees (to train your staff to help with the retrofit and future maintenance) will be added, as well as extended freight of the fuel station and vehicle components.

You must provide a suitable workshop and enough competent and available personnel for the retrofit project. We can also fly in a whole crew, but this may cost more.

Determine how you will source hydrogen

We specialize in “green” hydrogen using local renewable water electrolysis from our supplied fueling stations. We also will help connect interested clients with any available “brown” hydrogen solutions using local waste biomass e.g. solid waste in landfills.

Ordering industrial hydrogen delivered in cylinders is a good way to start and for smaller volumes, it may be preferable to investing in an electrolyzer fuel station. We work with Praxair Canada and their local distributor Quantum Machine Works in Whitehorse, Yukon to supply large steel hydrogen cylinders that can be refilled in Whitehorse.
